Abu Dhabi announces itself slowly. You drive in from the airport past endless construction, the air thick with heat and the smell of wet concrete. Then suddenly it appears: the Sheikh Zayed Mosque, impossibly white against the pale blue sky, a statement of intent.

The city is a series of islands connected by bridges. There's the downtown core, all glass towers and five-star hotels. There's Yas Island, home to Ferrari World and a Formula 1 track. There's Saadiyat Island, where the Louvre Abu Dhabi sits, its latticed dome casting dappled shadows on the water.

But the real Abu Dhabi is away from the big attractions. It's in the Iranian restaurants in the back streets, the dhow wharves where you can watch wooden boats being built by hand, the date farms out in the desert where the silence is absolute.

October to April is bearable. Summer is brutal. Spend a day kayaking through the mangroves — the contrast between the city and the natural world is remarkable. Pair with a few nights in the Empty Quarter for proper desert immersion.
