Albufeira isn't pretending to be a quiet fishing village. It's the Algarve's main stage, and it's loud. The key is choosing your side: the cobbled streets of the Old Town, or the neon-lit chaos of The Strip. The beaches are fantastic, but you'll be sharing them.
the stays we’d put our own family in first.

The heat comes off the pavement in waves, even after sunset. Down on the main beach, the last of the sunbathers are packing up, but the town is just getting started. This is Albufeira's daily rhythm: a slow, sun-drenched day giving way to a loud, bright night.
The town is split in two. The Old Town is a maze of whitewashed buildings and cobbled lanes leading to a central square, where families eat grilled fish and listen to street performers. It's charming, busy, and feels like the classic holiday you remember. A few kilometres east is 'The Strip,' a different universe entirely. It’s a neon-soaked kilometre of sports bars, karaoke joints, and clubs that throb until dawn. There's no subtlety here; it's pure, unapologetic holiday fun.
Let's be honest: this is not the place to escape the crowds. In July and August, it's a heaving mass of sunburned tourists from all over Europe. You come here because you want the energy, the convenience of having a hundred restaurants to choose from, and beaches so golden they look Photoshopped.
It’s perfect for a stag or hen do, a first family holiday abroad where you need everything to be easy, or if you just want to switch off and lie in the sun for a week. For a quieter experience, come in May or September when the weather is still great but the crowds have thinned.
