Driving the Amalfi Coast road is a cliché, but it's a cliché for a reason. One hairpin turn after another, each bend revealing a more jaw-dropping view than the last. The air smells of salt and lemon blossoms; the sun beats down on the white-washed walls. Vespas buzz past, laden with groceries or teenagers. The soundtrack is the constant hum of cicadas and the distant splash of waves.

Positano is the poster child, a cascade of colourful houses tumbling down to the sea. Amalfi is the historic heart, with its grand Duomo. Ravello is perched high above, offering panoramic vistas. Each town has its own character, its own rhythm.

The coast is best visited in the shoulder seasons – May-June or September-October – when the crowds are thinner and the weather is still warm. Rent a car if you dare, but be prepared for some nerve-wracking driving. A ferry is a more relaxed way to hop between towns. This is not the place for a budget trip or quiet relaxation. Pair with Naples for grit or Puglia for space.
