why amman

roman ruins beside third-wave coffee. more than a layover.

From the Citadel at sunset, you see all of Amman's layers at once. The Roman Theatre carved into one hill, the pale limestone houses clinging to the others, the call to prayer echoing from a dozen minarets. This isn't a city preserved in amber; it's a working, breathing place that wears its history casually, not as a performance for tourists.

The city splits in two. There's the downtown Balad, a maze of souks where the air smells of cardamom and ground coffee, and where Hashem restaurant has been serving the city's best falafel for decades. Then there's modern West Amman, a ten-minute taxi ride away, with its art galleries, leafy cafes, and rooftop bars that feel more like Beirut than the Middle East of your imagination.

Amman's gift is its honesty. It's not as monumental as Petra or as dramatic as Wadi Rum, and it doesn't try to be. It's a city for walking, for eating, for getting a feel for modern Jordan before you dive into its deep past. Give it at least two full days. Use it as your base, for sure, but don't just pass through. The knafeh alone is worth an extra night.
