The day in Ao Nang starts with a sound: the sputtering cough of a dozen longtail boat engines coming to life. The main beach isn't for sunbathing; it's a departure lounge, a bustling strip of sand where captains shout destinations and the air smells of two-stroke oil, sunscreen, and grilled sweetcorn.

This is Krabi's nerve centre. A town built entirely around the limestone karsts that jut out of the Andaman Sea just offshore. The main road is a kilometre-long procession of dive shops, seafood restaurants with identical plastic menus, and tour operators selling the same four island trips. It's not charming, but it is incredibly functional. Everything you need to access the region's staggering beauty is right here.

Don't mistake the base camp for the summit. The magic of Krabi isn't in Ao Nang itself, but in the places it can get you to in under 20 minutes: the rock-climbing paradise of Railay, the absurdly perfect sand of Phra Nang cave beach, the quiet shores of Koh Hong.

Treat it for what it is: the most convenient, well-equipped launchpad in southern Thailand. Stay here for the choice of restaurants and easy logistics. But spend your days on a boat, hopping between islands that still feel like a secret, even if you're sharing them.
