Imagine waking up to the sound of cowbells echoing across an alpine valley. The air is crisp, the smell of pine hangs heavy, and the mountains rise impossibly high on all sides. That's Austria outside the cities.

Of course, Vienna is a draw – the coffee houses, the Habsburg palaces, the art museums. Salzburg has its baroque charm. But Austria's genius lies in its ability to balance culture and nature. You can spend the morning hiking a glacier and the afternoon in a world-class gallery.

The lake district around Hallstatt is straight out of a fairytale, but busy in summer. The Grossglockner High Alpine Road is one of Europe's most spectacular drives. The wine taverns outside Vienna (Heurigen) are where you'll find the real atmosphere, the clinking of glasses and the accordions.

Best in shoulder season (May-June, Sept-Oct) to avoid the crowds. Pair with a few days in Prague or Budapest for a contrast in imperial styles. Not ideal if you dislike driving – distances are manageable, but the roads are winding.
