why bangkok

street food worth the trip. stay on the bts, skip the traffic.

Bangkok doesn't ease you in. You arrive and it's already happening: the humidity, the jasmine garlands, the 7-Elevens every thirty metres, the tuk-tuks, the suits pouring out of glass towers, the monks in saffron waiting for the Skytrain.

The city is layers. There's the old Bangkok of canal-side temples and wooden shophouses — take a longtail boat through Thonburi at dawn before the tourist boats clog the klongs. There's the new Bangkok of rooftop bars and Michelin-starred street food and malls so air-conditioned you'll need a jacket. And then there's the Bangkok most visitors miss: the design district of Charoenkrung, the neighbourhood restaurants of Ari, the jazz bars of Thonglor.

The street food is not negotiable. Khao man gai from the place with the queue. Boat noodles in Victory Monument. The green curry here will recalibrate your standards permanently.

Stay near a BTS or MRT station — the traffic is genuinely brutal. Sukhumvit for convenience, Riverside for romance, Ari or Thonglor if you want to feel like you live here. November to February is the "cool" season — still 30°C, but bearable.
