why budapest

hilly buda faces flat pest. baths double as its living room.

The sound is the first thing you notice in the Szechenyi Baths: a gentle echo of splashing water and quiet Hungarian chatter bouncing off high, domed ceilings. You sink into the geothermally heated water, steam rising into the cold air, and watch old men play chess on floating boards. This isn't a spa; it's the city's public living room.

Budapest is two distinct cities staring each other down across the Danube. Hilly, regal Buda holds the castle and quiet, cobbled streets. Flat, sprawling Pest is the commercial and nightlife heart, where the 19th-century grandeur of the Austro-Hungarian Empire meets the concrete scars of the 20th. You can still see the bullet holes on apartment buildings from the 1956 Uprising.

The city's modern pulse is found in the Jewish Quarter's ruin bars—sprawling, eclectic spaces built into the courtyards of abandoned buildings. They started as a post-communist art project and are now a defining part of the city's soul. The goulash here, rich with paprika and smoke, will ruin you for any other version.

This is a city for walkers, for those who appreciate history that isn't perfectly polished. It's grander than Prague, less formal than Vienna. Base yourself in Pest and use the excellent, rattling yellow trams to get around. Just make sure you validate your ticket.
