Cairo hits you all at once: the relentless sun, the honking taxis, the crush of people along the Corniche. It’s a city of 20 million that feels both ancient and utterly contemporary — donkey carts sharing the road with Audis, satellite dishes sprouting from Ottoman-era rooftops.

The pyramids are, of course, essential — arrive early to beat the tour buses and the hawkers. But Cairo is more than pharaonic monuments. Islamic Cairo is a labyrinth of mosques and souks, where the scent of frankincense hangs in the air and craftsmen still practice trades passed down for centuries. Coptic Cairo is a quiet enclave of churches and monasteries, a refuge from the city's relentless energy.

Don't skip the Egyptian Museum — it's overwhelming but unmissable. The treasures of Tutankhamun are just the beginning. The new Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) is now open and worth seeing too.

Base yourself in Zamalek for relative calm. The Four Seasons at Nile Plaza has the best views. Winter is ideal — November to March. Pair with a Nile cruise to Luxor and Aswan for context, or a week in the Red Sea for decompression.
