You wake to the rhythmic sweep of a straw broom on stone and the smell of woodsmoke and damp earth. In Cambodia, the morning is the only time the air doesn't feel like a warm, wet blanket. By 10am, the sun is a physical force, baking the red laterite dust until it coats everything in a fine, rusty powder.

Most visitors treat the country as a three-day add-on to a Thailand trip, sprinting through the main temples of Angkor before flying out. They miss the real texture of the place: the particular melancholy of the crumbling French colonial buildings in Battambang, the sound of cicadas screaming in the canopy at Koh Ker, or the sharp, funky tang of prahok—fermented fish paste—drifting from a riverside market. It is a country of deep scars and incredible gentleness, where the weight of the 20th century sits right next to 12th-century grandeur.

The infrastructure is a work in progress. Expect bumpy rides, power cuts in the provinces, and a level of poverty that can be confronting if you aren't prepared. But the reward is a sense of discovery that’s getting harder to find in Southeast Asia.
