The air in Canggu is thick with humidity, incense, and the fumes from a thousand scooters navigating a road built for a dozen bullock carts. This is the Bali you've seen on Instagram: rice paddies inexplicably wedged between minimalist concrete villas, surf shops next to vegan ice cream parlours, and co-working spaces humming with the sound of MacBooks and oat milk steamers.

It’s a neighbourhood that runs on a specific rhythm: early morning surf at Echo Beach, a long brunch that bleeds into work, a sunset session at a beanbag-strewn beach bar. The beaches here are dark volcanic sand, better for surfers than for swimmers, pounded by a relentless swell. The real centres of gravity are the cafes and beach clubs, where the currency is less the rupiah and more being seen in the right place.

The infamous 'Canggu shortcut' is a perfect metaphor for the place—a once-clever hack now so choked with traffic it’s slower than the main road. Don't come here seeking serenity or a deep cultural dive. Come here for the energy, the network, and to live, for a week, the life of a well-tanned, remote-working, surf-obsessed expatriate.
