Central Tokyo is the discreet half of the city — the half most repeat visitors choose once they've done Shinjuku and Shibuya.

Marunouchi is the financial quarter that wraps the Imperial Palace and Tokyo Station. The luxury hotel cluster here is Tokyo's densest — Aman Tokyo on floors 33-38 of the Otemachi Tower, Four Seasons Marunouchi inside the Tokyo Building, Shangri-La above the station's Pacific Century Place, Mandarin Oriental atop Nihonbashi Mitsui Tower, Palace Hotel directly opposite the palace gates. Walking the Imperial Palace East Gardens (free, opens 9am, closes 3-4pm) is the morning ritual most central Tokyo guests build their day around. The streets are quieter than Shinjuku at any hour, the architecture leans cleaner and contemporary, and the dining is restaurant-week serious — KAGURA-zaka kaiseki, and the Three-Michelin sushi counters on the side streets.

Ginza is the boutique half. Wako's clock tower at Yon-chome crossing, Mitsukoshi and Matsuya department stores, Mikimoto, the Sony Building, Itoya stationery, Kabuki-za. The streets close to traffic on Saturday and Sunday afternoons (the "hokousha tengoku" pedestrian paradise from 12-5pm). The hotel scene here used to be sparser but has filled in with the Tokyo Edition, Kimpton Shinjuku, and the Hyatt Centric Ginza — a half-tier below Marunouchi's luxury but with the shopping and dining at your doorstep.

The two are connected by an 8-minute walk along Hibiya-dori past the Imperial Theatre and the Imperial Hotel, or one stop on the Marunouchi line. For an Indian family wanting Tokyo's grown-up half — luxury hotels, Imperial Palace gardens, world-class shopping, restaurant-tier dining, none of the kabukicho or shibuya stimulus — this bucket is the answer.
