why champs élysées

arc de triomphe frames the view; walk it once, no need to linger.

There's a moment, walking west from the Place de la Concorde, when the Arc de Triomphe perfectly frames itself at the end of the avenue. It’s a view you’ve seen in a thousand films, and for that alone, the walk is worth doing once.

But the avenue itself is a different story. This is Paris as a global billboard. Flagship stores for brands you can find in Dubai or New York sit next to car showrooms and overpriced brasseries serving mediocre steak frites to tired tourists. The sound isn't the clink of coffee cups; it's the constant, six-lane roar of traffic echoing down the canyon of Haussmannian facades. Don't come here looking for the soul of Paris; you won't find it.

This is the city's grand, commercial artery—impressive in its scale, but with very little local blood pumping through it. Our advice? Go early in the morning before the crowds descend. Walk the length of it, climb the Arc for the staggering view, and then immediately duck into the side streets of the 8th arrondissement. That's where the real neighbourhood begins.
