The light in Chania's harbour at dusk is something else. The 16th-century Venetian lighthouse glows, the water reflects a dozen taverna signs, and the whole scene feels like a perfectly preserved postcard. It is beautiful, and in July, it is very busy.

But the city's real character lives a few steps back from the waterfront. Duck into an alley and the noise fades, replaced by the clink of glasses and the scent of night-blooming jasmine. Here, Venetian mansions with peeling pastel paint sit next to Ottoman-era houses with wooden balconies. This isn't a museum; it's a living city, where the flagstones underfoot are worn smooth by five hundred years of traffic and the covered market still hums with locals buying cheese and honey.

Chania is a base, not a self-contained resort. The city itself has small, perfectly fine beaches, but the legendary ones—the pink sands of Elafonisi, the turquoise lagoon of Balos—are a solid hour or two's drive away. Rent a car. Come in May or September to dodge the crowds. This is Crete for those who want history and food first, with world-class beaches as the reward for a little effort.
