why chiang mai

cooler than bangkok. khao soi, temples, mountain day trips.

You wake to a different sound in Chiang Mai. Not the roar of Bangkok's Skytrain, but the gentle chime of temple bells and the distant chanting of monks. This is Thailand's cultural north, a city that feels rooted in a way the capital doesn't.

The heart is the Old City, a perfect square still defined by its ancient moat and crumbling brick walls. Inside, hundreds of temples share laneways with guesthouses, coffee shops, and fantastic little restaurants. But this isn't a sleepy village. Outside the moat, Chiang Mai is a proper city with traffic, malls, and a thriving digital nomad scene that has brought with it excellent coffee and brunch spots.

The food is the main event. Northern Thai cuisine is distinct, and you're here for one thing above all: khao soi. That rich, coconut-curry noodle soup will become your benchmark. Once you've eaten your fill, the mountains call. Doi Suthep temple glitters on the hillside, a constant landmark, but go further to waterfalls and coffee plantations where the air is genuinely cool.

The one non-negotiable caveat: avoid the burning season, roughly February to April, when air quality is genuinely poor. Come any other time. Pair it with a few frantic days in Bangkok for contrast, or use it as a launching pad for the mountains further north.
