why choeng mon

two islands calm this bay. ten minutes from the airport.

The first thing you notice about Choeng Mon is how quiet it is for somewhere ten minutes from a runway. Planes bank low over the bay every couple of hours — small ATRs, mostly Bangkok Airways turbo-props — and then the silence comes back, broken by the long-tails running between the two small islands that protect the cove.

The bay is the calmest swimming water on Samui. Two limestone outcrops break the swell, so even in shoulder months you can usually still get in. Twice a day the tide drops far enough that a curving sandbar appears — you can walk most of the way to the nearer island. The kids will figure this out within an hour of arrival.

The neighbourhood is smaller than it looks on a map. A single short strip of restaurants, a 7-Eleven, and after that almost everything happens inside the resorts. If you want a Fisherman's Village evening, Bophut is a 10-minute taxi. Chaweng's noise is another 10 on top of that.

Best for families with young kids who want a swimmable beach and don't want to spend their first afternoon in a transfer. Pool villa supply here is unusually good — book the category up if you can.
