why colombia

caribbean heat in cartagena. cool peaks in bogotá. pick two.

You start in Cartagena, where the Caribbean air is thick and the old city walls hold centuries of heat. Bougainvillea spills over colonial balconies, and the sound of cumbia drifts from open doorways. Then you fly inland, and two hours later you're in Bogotá, 8,600 feet up, pulling on a jacket as cool mountain air hits your face. This is the central tension of Colombia: it’s a dozen different countries in one.

Medellín, once the world's most dangerous city, now hums with the efficiency of its public transit and the energy of its creative neighbourhoods. In the coffee triangle, you're surrounded by the smell of roasting beans and the impossible green of wax palm valleys. This isn't just a place to drink coffee; it's where you learn that most of what you've been drinking your whole life is the low-grade export reject.

Is it perfectly safe? Use common sense, especially at night in big cities, just as you would anywhere. The biggest challenge isn't safety, but choice. Trying to see everything in ten days is a recipe for exhaustion, full of airports and check-ins.

Pick a lane. Do the cities (Bogotá, Medellín) and the coffee region. Or do the coast (Cartagena, Tayrona) and the islands. Don't try to do both unless you have three weeks. And learn a few words of Spanish — it will open doors that would otherwise stay closed.
