Those resorts are fine for what they are; the beaches in Punta Cana and La Romana are genuinely world-class. But the country's real personality is inland. It's in the cool air of the Cordillera Central mountains, in the small towns where baseball is a religion, and in the cigar lounges of Santiago. This is a place with its own rhythm, a mix of Latin confidence and Caribbean ease, fueled by strong coffee and aged Brugal rum.
