This is Dorsoduro, the city's university quarter and its artistic heart, where palazzo galleries sit next to workshops quietly restoring gondolas.

The air here smells of fried sage and briny canal water. By day, it's about the art: the modern masterpieces at the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, the Venetian masters at the Gallerie dell'Accademia. By late afternoon, the neighbourhood comes alive. Campo Santa Margherita fills with students, and the bacari get shoulder-to-shoulder crowded for the cicchetti and ombra (a small glass of wine) ritual.
