why edinburgh

built on a volcano. bring layers for the forth wind.

The wind that comes off the Firth of Forth is a physical presence in Edinburgh. It finds you on the bridges, funnels down the narrow stone alleyways of the Old Town, and carries the faint, sweet smell of malt from the breweries. This is a city built on a volcano, and it feels like it — dramatic, layered, and unforgiving of bad footwear.

The Royal Mile is the spine, a tourist-clogged artery running from the Castle to the Palace. The real magic, though, is in the 'closes' that branch off it: steep, narrow passages that drop away into sudden silence, revealing hidden gardens and centuries-old pubs where the whisky list is a leather-bound volume.

Cross over to the New Town and the city breathes out. The Georgian grid of wide streets and elegant squares feels like a different world, built during the Enlightenment by people who believed in reason and order. The food scene here has finally caught up with the city's intellectual history; it's no longer just haggis and deep-fried Mars bars.

Come in August and the city becomes the world's biggest stage for the Fringe Festival. It's electrifying, but also chaos. For a quieter visit, come in spring or autumn. And no matter the season, pack a waterproof jacket. You'll use it.
