The first thing you notice is the sound of seagulls and the scent of Baltic salt on the wind. The Long Market unfolds before you, a sweep of impossibly ornate, narrow houses painted in ochre and green, looking more like Amsterdam than what you might picture of Poland. It feels like a merchant's dream from the 17th century, fuelled by amber and grain.

But this city is a ghost. The entire centre was obliterated in 1945 and rebuilt, brick by painstaking brick, from old photographs. That resilience is the real story. One history is in the amber workshops of Mariacka Street and the massive wooden crane on the riverfront. The other is a short tram ride away, at the gates of the shipyard, where the Solidarity movement began to dismantle the Iron Curtain. You can feel the weight of it in the air.

Gdańsk asks for your attention. It’s for the traveller who reads the plaque. Pair it with a day trip to the beaches of Sopot for a dose of seaside frivolity—the contrast makes both places richer. And the wind off the water is no joke; bring a jacket, even in July.
