Goa isn't really India, but that's the point. It's India on training wheels — beaches instead of megacities, seafood shacks instead of curries, Kingfisher instead of chai. Come to decompress, recalibrate, maybe learn to surf. Just don't expect a representative sample of the subcontinent.
the stays we’d put our own family in first.

Goa is where Indians go to escape India. Which is to say, it's a state of mind as much as a place. The air smells of frangipani and wood smoke. The roads wind through coconut groves. The afternoons are for swimming, the evenings for seafood and cold beer.
North Goa is beaches, beach shacks, and trance parties that go till dawn. Anjuna and Vagator are the classics, but Arambol has a certain faded charm if you don't mind the backpacker scene. South Goa is quieter, more upscale — think boutique hotels and yoga retreats. Palolem is beautiful but mobbed; Agonda and Patnem are better bets if you want some peace.
Beyond the beaches, there's Old Goa — a UNESCO World Heritage site with cathedrals and convents that recall the Portuguese colonial era. Panjim, the capital, is a charming mix of Portuguese and Indian architecture. And then there's the food — vindaloo, xacuti, cafreal, all washed down with local feni.
Go between October and March. December is peak season. Consider flying into Dabolim and out of Mumbai to avoid backtracking. And don't try to "do" all of Goa in one trip — pick a north or south and settle in.
