The hill country starts the moment you leave Kandy. The road climbs through tea estates that stripe the slopes in horizontal lines for hours, the temperature drops a degree every fifteen minutes, and by the time you reach Nuwara Eliya at 1,800m you're in cardigans. This is the Sri Lanka the British built for themselves — tea bungalows, half-timber houses, a Hill Club where the dress code is still jacket-and-tie at dinner.

Kandy is the cultural anchor: Temple of the Tooth, the lakefront walk, Peradeniya Botanical Gardens for kids. From there the routing is east — Hatton for the Ceylon Tea Trails bungalows (the famous walking-trails-and-bungalow-stays setup, 5+ kids only), Nuwara Eliya for the Little England kitsch and the strawberry farms, Ella for the Insta-famous train arrival and Nine Arches Bridge.

The train ride from Kandy down to Ella is the trip. Six and a half hours through tea estates, second-class observation seats book out 30 days ahead, and the doorway-hanging photos are not staged — that's how everyone rides. The road is faster (4hr) but the train is the experience.

Go any time. The hill country flips the seasonal logic: cool and clear when the coast is in monsoon, occasionally drizzly when the coast is dry. Layer up — nights drop to 12°C in Nuwara Eliya in January.
