why kamala

casuarina beach, calm water. sandcastles by day, early nights.

Kamala centres around a crescent beach, edged with casuarina trees that filter the harsh afternoon sun. The sand is coarser than some of Phuket's west coast beaches, but the water is calm and clear during high season. The overall vibe is low-key — families building sandcastles, couples strolling hand-in-hand, old men casting fishing lines into the Andaman Sea.

The main street, Rim Had Road, is lined with restaurants serving fresh seafood and Thai classics. The air smells of grilled prawns and lemongrass. There are a few bars, but they're more likely to be playing reggae than house music. The pace of life is slow, deliberate.

Inland from the beach, Kamala is a mix of residential streets, small shops, and local markets. You'll hear the rhythmic clatter of a wok from a street vendor. You can buy fresh fruit and vegetables from the roadside stalls. You can get a massage for a fraction of the price you'd pay in a resort.

Not for party animals or those seeking high-end luxury. But if you're looking for a relaxed beach town with a local feel, Kamala is a good choice. Best from November to April, when the weather is dry and the sea is calm. Pair with a few days in Phuket Town for a dose of culture.
