why kandy

where the tooth relic lives. go early, skip the tour buses.

Kandy feels different from Colombo or Galle. The air is cooler, the pace is slower, and the scent of frangipani mixes with woodsmoke in the evenings. This is hill country, and you feel it.

The Temple of the Tooth is the main draw — Buddhists from all over the world make the pilgrimage to see (or rather, be near) the sacred relic. Get there early to avoid the tour buses and the heat. The nearby botanical gardens are worth an afternoon — the orchid collection is spectacular, and the lawns are perfect for a picnic.

Beyond the main attractions, Kandy is a good base for exploring the tea plantations of the central highlands. Take a day trip to Nuwara Eliya, or hike in the Knuckles Mountain Range. Return to Kandy in the evening for a kottu roti and a Lion Lager.

Stay near the lake if you want views, but be prepared for traffic. The quieter guesthouses are up in the hills. Kandy is best as part of a larger Sri Lankan itinerary — two or three days is enough to see the highlights. Pair with the beaches of the south coast for contrast.
