why karon

phuket beach life, less the madness.

Karon is Phuket without the hard edges. You can still get a Chang beer and a massage for cheap, but the decibel level is lower and the general atmosphere is more relaxed.

The beach is the draw — a long, wide stretch of sand that rarely feels crowded. The water is clear, especially during high season (November to April). The usual watersports are available, but the vibe is more swimming and sunbathing than jet-skiing and banana boats.

Beyond the beach, Karon has a decent selection of restaurants, from Thai seafood to Italian trattorias. The night market near the Karon Temple is worth a visit for cheap eats and souvenirs. But the real draw is the relative peace and quiet — a place to decompress after the chaos of Patong or before heading off to explore the rest of Phuket.

Stay on the southern end for quiet, the northern end for restaurants. Rent a scooter to explore nearby beaches like Kata Noi. Pair with a few days in Phuket Town for a dose of culture.
