why koh samui

calmer than phuket, and private villas go further here.

Koh Samui smells of frangipani and diesel, a tropical mix that announces you've arrived somewhere between upscale resort and working island. The beaches are textbook Thai — white sand, turquoise water, longtail boats bobbing in the distance. The interior is all coconut groves and waterfalls, a green counterpoint to the blue.

Samui's appeal is its balance. It has luxury resorts and backpacker bungalows, fine dining and street food, lively beach clubs and secluded coves. You can spend your days snorkeling, kayaking, or just lounging by the pool with a Singha. Or you can explore the island's temples, waterfalls, and hidden beaches.

It's not undiscovered, but it's less chaotic than Phuket. The airport is charmingly small. The traffic, while present, is manageable. The vibe is relaxed and friendly.

Best in dry season (December to April). Pair with a few days in Bangkok for city contrast, or head north to Koh Phangan for a different, more rustic island experience.
