why little india

mustafa centre never closes. curries on banana leaves till late.

Step off the MRT and you're immediately hit by it: a wall of humidity laced with cardamom, the thump of Bollywood from the Mustafa Centre, aunties in saris haggling over jasmine garlands. This is Little India, and it's a world away from the manicured lawns and silent elevators of the rest of Singapore.

Serangoon Road is the main artery, packed with shops selling everything from silk to spices to SIM cards. But the real magic happens in the side streets: hole-in-the-wall restaurants serving fiery curries on banana leaves, fortune tellers reading palms under flickering neon, temples overflowing with deities and devotees.

It's a 24-hour neighbourhood. Mustafa Centre never closes. You can get a late-night prata or an early-morning dosa anytime. The downside? It can be overwhelming. The crowds, the smells, the noise — it's not for everyone.

Stay here if you want to feel like you've left Singapore without leaving. Pair with a stay in the quiet Botanic Gardens for contrast. Best explored on foot, but wear comfortable shoes — the sidewalks are uneven and the crowds are relentless.
