worth more than a transfer. rent a car for the south beaches.

The air that hits you on the tarmac at Mahé is thick with salt and chlorophyll. This isn't a manicured resort atoll; it's a proper island with granite mountains that tear at the clouds and a road that winds along the coast, dipping in and out of jungle.

As the main island, Mahé is the country's hub. This means you'll find the miniature capital, Victoria, and a dose of real Seychellois life, not just resort culture. The north is more developed, but the real magic is south of the airport. Here, the road narrows and you find beaches like Anse Intendance — perfect crescents of white sand framed by giant, time-worn granite boulders, looking exactly like the photos promised.

The soundscape is a mix of waves on granite and the chatter of fruit bats in the evening. The air smells of frangipani and, after a brief tropical downpour, the rich scent of wet earth from the rainforest that covers the island's core. Don't expect total seclusion; you'll share the road with local buses. That's its charm.

Spend three or four days here to acclimatise and explore before hopping to the quieter outer islands. It’s the Seychelles with a pulse.
