why mexico

beach resorts one week, oaxaca and mexico city the next.

Mexico is a big country that contains multitudes. The tourist clichés — beaches, tequila, sombreros — barely scratch the surface. Go beyond the resorts and you'll find landscapes that range from desert to jungle, ancient ruins that predate Rome, and cities with a pulse all their own.

Oaxaca City is a feast for the senses: the smell of mole negro simmering, the sound of brass bands in the zócalo, the taste of mezcal that will ruin you for tequila forever. San Miguel de Allende is a baroque fever dream of bougainvillea and cobblestones, where the light turns the pink sandstone a deeper rose with every passing hour. The Copper Canyon is four times the size of the Grand Canyon, accessible by a railway line that clings to the cliffs.

The trade-off is that Mexico requires effort. You'll want to learn some Spanish. You'll want to get off the beaten path. You'll want to accept that things might not always go according to plan. But the rewards are immeasurable.

Pair with a week in Belize for Caribbean diving and Mayan ruins. Avoid hurricane season (June-November). Pack light, eat everything.
