why mexico city

high altitude — pace day one. aztec ruins under colonial roofs.

Mexico City is a beast. Twenty million people, spread across a high-altitude valley, smog hanging in the distance. But give it a few days and it gets under your skin.

The scale is overwhelming at first. Ancient pyramids next to modern skyscrapers, the scent of exhaust and roasting corn, Spanish colonial architecture sinking slowly into the unstable ground. But that's the point — it's a city of layers, built on top of itself for centuries.

Explore the Centro Historico — the Zócalo, the Palacio de Bellas Artes, the Templo Mayor. Then get lost in the neighbourhoods: Coyoacán for Frida Kahlo, Roma Norte for cafes and galleries, San Rafael for street art and pulquerías. The tacos are not negotiable. Every stall has its specialty — carnitas, al pastor, suadero. Find the one with the longest line and get in it.

Stay in Roma Norte or Condesa — walkable, safe, full of great food. Polanco is fancier but less interesting. The Metro is cheap and efficient, but avoid it during rush hour. Uber is everywhere. September and October are the best months — the weather is mild, the jacarandas are in bloom, and the Day of the Dead preparations are underway.

Pair with Oaxaca for food, San Miguel de Allende for architecture, or the Yucatan Peninsula for Mayan ruins.
