It smells of expensive sunblock and sea spray, underscored by the faint, charcoal scent of roasting pork from a nearby kitchen. Then comes the soundtrack: the low thrum of a bass-heavy car stereo, the rapid-fire Spanish of a sidewalk argument, and the clinking of ice in a glass of white sangria.

Miami is a city of distinct territories. South Beach is the postcard—all pastel Art Deco buildings and turquoise water—but it can feel like a movie set where the extras are trying too hard. For the real soul, you go inland. The Design District offers a sterile, high-fashion perfection where the air-conditioning is set to a crisp 18°C, while Little Havana offers the opposite: the heat of the sun on concrete, the tactile click-clack of dominoes in Maximo Gomez Park, and the best cafecito of your life served through a literal hole in the wall.

The trade-off is the surface-level gloss. Everything in Miami is designed to be seen, which means service can sometimes feel transactional and the "scene" can feel exhausting. It is unapologetically materialistic. But if you lean into the absurdity, find a spot under a palm tree where the pool water is blood-warm by mid-afternoon, and accept that you will spend too much on a cocktail, the city’s energy becomes infectious.

Best visited between January and April when the rest of the world is freezing. Avoid hurricane season unless you enjoy horizontal rain and flight cancellations.
