Touristy, yes, but the infrastructure and hotel density here make it the most practical base for a first NYC trip. Times Square itself is worth seeing once and avoiding after that.
the stays we’d put our own family in first.

Times Square, Fifth Avenue, Central Park's south edge, Rockefeller Center, Broadway, MoMA — Midtown is the New York that every first-time visitor pictures, and for good reason. The concentration of things to do per square block is unmatched. The hotel inventory is the deepest in Manhattan: from 1,800-room conference flagships (Marriott Marquis, Hilton Midtown) to the historic palaces of 5th and 57th (Plaza, St. Regis, Peninsula, Park Hyatt, Pierre, Langham), to the tower-design hotels (Equinox Hudson Yards, Pendry Manhattan West) on the western edge, to the dense business 4★ stack (Renaissance Times Square, Westin Grand Central, Sheraton Times Square).
Stay here for the first NYC trip, when the goal is to see everything: walk to a Broadway show, subway 10 minutes to MoMA, walk to Central Park's south edge, walk to Rockefeller Center for the Christmas tree, walk to 5th Avenue for shopping, walk to Bryant Park for a winter market. The downside is the daily texture: Times Square crowds, the constant horns, restaurant tourist traps if you don't know where to eat. But the upside is doing more in less time than anywhere else in the city.
The neighbourhood splits into three sub-zones internally. **West Midtown** (Times Square, Hell's Kitchen, Hudson Yards) is theatre + tourist + newer luxury (Pendry, Equinox). **Central / 5th Ave** is the historic palace strip (Plaza, Peninsula, St. Regis, Pierre — multi-gen Indian family default for the apex stay). **East Midtown** (Grand Central, Murray Hill) is quieter, more business, slightly cheaper.
Stay here if: this is a first-time NYC trip, you have kids 5-12, you're doing 2+ Broadway shows, or you want palace-tier service on 5th Avenue. Skip if: you've done Times Square already and want a calmer base (route to Upper East Side or SoHo/Tribeca instead), or you want walkable nightlife outside the tourist zone.
