wide georgian streets, easier than old town's steep closes.

Step across the invisible line from Old Town and you’re in another century. The higgledy-piggledy closes and tenements give way to wide, planned streets lined with Georgian facades. New Town is the Edinburgh of grand squares, literary landmarks, and window displays designed to entice.

It’s an orderly contrast to the organic chaos of the Old Town. Built in stages from the late 18th century onwards, it was a deliberate attempt to create a more modern, elegant city. And it worked. Today, it’s a UNESCO World Heritage site that’s home to some of Edinburgh’s best hotels, restaurants, and shops.

Stroll along Princes Street Gardens for views of the castle. Browse the bookshops of George Street. Sample single malts on Rose Street — the peat smoke mingling with the scent of woollens from the shops. Not as atmospheric as Old Town, but just as essential.
