Opéra is tourist-central, yes, but for a reason. Haussmann's boulevards are wider, the department stores grander, the patisseries shinier. Skip the chain restaurants, find a proper bistro, and watch Paris happen — preferably with a glass of something cold and fizzy.

You emerge from the Métro into a blast of Parisian grandeur: Haussmann's creamy facades stretching to the horizon, the Palais Garnier shimmering in the afternoon light, the air thick with the scent of exhaust and expensive perfume. This is Opéra, the Paris of postcards.
The neighbourhood is defined by its boulevards — wide avenues designed to prevent barricades (and allow for impressive military parades). Galeries Lafayette and Printemps are department stores that are worth visiting even if you don't buy anything — the architecture alone is reason enough.
But the real heart of Opéra is the Palais Garnier, one of the most opulent opera houses in the world. Even if you don't see a performance, take a tour. The grand staircase, the Chagall ceiling, the sheer over-the-topness of it all — it's pure Parisian theatre.
Stay here if you want to be in the middle of it all — close to shopping, museums, and easy access to the rest of the city. But be prepared for crowds, and don't expect to find "hidden gems" around every corner. This is Paris at its most unapologetically touristy. Pair with a few days in the Marais for a dose of old-world charm.
