why palm jumeirah

You see it from the plane: a giant palm frond spreading into the Gulf, ringed by a crescent. You know it's artificial, but it's still arresting. This is Palm Jumeirah, Dubai's monument to ambition.

The monorail glides down the spine of the palm, stopping at hotels and apartment blocks. The air conditioning is fierce. The fronds are residential, mostly low-rise villas with private beaches. At the tip is the Atlantis, a hotel that's a destination in itself, with an aquarium, water park, and restaurants where you could easily drop a month's rent. The Waldorf Astoria, the One&Only are here too.

It's less a neighborhood than a collection of resorts, but the views are undeniable — the Dubai skyline shimmering in the heat haze, the Gulf stretching to the horizon. Come here for the spectacle, for the feeling of being somewhere utterly improbable. But don't expect to feel like you're in the Middle East.

The monorail connects to the Dubai Metro. Useful, because traffic is grim. Best in winter, when you can actually walk outside for more than ten minutes. Pair with a few days in old Dubai for a change of pace — the spice souk, the creek, the abras plying the water.
