why porto

port wine cellars across the bridge. lisbon's grit, fewer crowds.

Porto feels like Lisbon ten years ago. Still rough around the edges, still authentic, still a place where you can find a tasca serving tripe stew for €5. The tourists are coming, yes, but they haven't taken over yet.

The city is built on the Douro River, the color of strong tea. The Ribeira district, with its medieval walls and colourful buildings, is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Cross the Dom Luís I Bridge (designed by a student of Eiffel) and you're in Vila Nova de Gaia, home to the port wine cellars. The air smells of aging oak and fortified wine.

Drink vinho verde, eat a francesinha (a gut-busting sandwich covered in cheese and tomato sauce), and take a day trip to the Douro Valley. The terraced vineyards are stunning, and the port lodges offer tours and tastings.

Go in the shoulder season (April-May or September-October) to avoid the summer crowds. Stay in the Ribeira for the atmosphere, or Vila Nova de Gaia for the port cellars. Pair with a few days in the Douro Valley to unplug. Not for those who need manicured perfection, but perfect for those who appreciate a city with soul.
