why portugal

three stops, north to south. give porto more than a night.

Portugal feels manageable in a way that Spain sometimes doesn't. You can drive the length of the country in a week, stopping along the way for seafood suppers, port wine tastings, and swims in the Atlantic. Lisbon is the obvious starting point — trams rattling up impossibly steep hills, the scent of grilling sardines hanging in the air, a melancholy saudade that feels both ancient and brand new.

But the real Portugal is north of Lisbon, in Porto and the Douro Valley. Porto is Lisbon twenty years ago — still gritty, still authentic, but with a burgeoning design scene and restaurants that will recalibrate your seafood standards permanently. And the Douro Valley is just absurd: terraced vineyards clinging to impossibly steep slopes, the air thick with the smell of ripening grapes, the river winding its way to the sea.

The Algarve is worth a visit for the beaches, but be prepared for crowds, especially in summer. For something different, head to the Alentejo — cork forests, rolling hills, and a slower pace of life.

Best in spring or fall — the summer heat can be brutal. Pair with a few days in Madrid or Seville for contrast.
