why prague

the postcard city everyone shoots. two hours out, empty arches.

Prague is inevitable. You've seen the photos — Charles Bridge, Prague Castle, the Astronomical Clock doing its hourly show. It's Gothic Disneyland, but still worth seeing once, especially in the shoulder season when the tour groups aren't ten deep.

The magic is outside Prague. Rent a car. Drive two hours north to Bohemian Switzerland National Park — sandstone arches that look like they belong in Utah. Hike to Pravcicka Gate, the largest natural sandstone arch in Europe, and have a beer overlooking the Elbe River.

Head east to Olomouc, a university town with baroque fountains, a UNESCO-listed Holy Trinity Column, and a fraction of Prague's tourists. The beer is cheaper, the vibe is more local, and the architecture is just as impressive.

And the beer, oh god, the beer. Pilsner Urquell, Budvar, Kozel, all on tap, all costing less than water. Your standards will be recalibrated permanently. No imported lager will ever taste the same.

Fly into Prague, spend two days hitting the highlights, then escape. The Czech Republic is small, easy to navigate, and criminally underrated. Spring or fall is best. Winter is atmospheric but cold. Summer is packed. Just go.
