why puerto vallarta

sierra madre jungle meets banderas bay. south of the río cuale.

The day’s heat radiates up from the cobblestones as you turn off the main drag into a side street in the Zona Romántica. You hear the clatter of a kitchen, the distant strum of a guitar, and smell grilled meat and lime from a taco cart setting up for the night. This is the Puerto Vallarta that matters, far from the cruise ships and mega-hotels to the north.

Unlike its Caribbean cousins, PV is a city first, resort second. The Sierra Madre mountains drop dramatically into the Bay of Banderas, meaning the jungle is always in view. The city itself is split by the Rio Cuale; stay south of it. The beaches in town are perfectly fine for a day of doing nothing with a margarita in hand, but the real energy is in the streets, the galleries, and the incredible food scene, from beachside grilled fish to late-night al pastor tacos.

It gets crowded, especially from December to March when the humpback whales are in the bay (a non-negotiable boat trip). The summer brings intense humidity and daily downpours. But for a Mexican destination with genuine character, it’s hard to beat. Pair it with a few nights in the quieter surf town of Sayulita for contrast.
