why riverside

where bangkok mornings still run by longtail boat, past wat arun.

Wake up to the sound of longtail boats cutting through the Chao Phraya. The Riverside is Bangkok at its most cinematic: temples glittering gold in the morning sun, monks collecting alms, the air thick with the scent of jasmine and river silt.

This is where Bangkok began, and the neighbourhood retains a sense of history that's easy to miss in the modern sprawl of Sukhumvit. The Oriental Hotel has been hosting writers and royalty for 150 years. Wat Arun (the Temple of Dawn) rises majestically from the west bank. You can spend days just wandering the small sois, stumbling across hidden shrines and antique shops.

The Riverside isn't the most convenient base for exploring the rest of Bangkok — you'll rely on boats and taxis rather than the BTS. But that's the point. It's a place to slow down, to breathe, to remember that there's more to Bangkok than just the street food (though the street food here is excellent too).

Stay at one of the big hotels for the full experience — the Authors' Lounge at the Mandarin Oriental is worth the splurge. Or check into one of the smaller guesthouses along the river for a more local feel. Best in the cool season (November to February) when the river breezes offer a welcome respite from the heat.
