why saint germain des prés

cafe culture and chic boutiques, edged by luxembourg gardens.

Saint-Germain-des-Prés smells of old books and strong coffee. It's the Paris of Sartre and de Beauvoir, of Miles Davis at the Club Saint-Germain, of Juliette Gréco haunting the cafes after midnight. The reality is more manicured now — the galleries sell Picassos to oligarchs, the boutiques carry the usual luxury brands — but the ghost of that intellectual ferment still lingers in the air.

The neighbourhood is walkable, elegant, expensive. The Luxembourg Gardens offer a respite from the city's constant motion. The Église de Saint-Germain-des-Prés is worth a visit for its Romanesque architecture and surprisingly peaceful interior. But the real draw is the cafes: Les Deux Magots, Café de Flore, Brasserie Lipp — institutions all, where you pay a premium for the privilege of sitting where Hemingway once sat.

Come for the history, stay for the style. Shop at Deyrolle for taxidermy and curiosities. Have a drink at Bar Hemingway in the Ritz (yes, it's touristy, but worth it once). Book well in advance — the hotels here are small and fill up quickly.

Pair with a stay in Le Marais for a dose of old-world charm, or Canal Saint-Martin for something a bit grittier.
