why samui north coast

sheltered bays stay calm when chaweng turns choppy.

The north coast is where most of Samui's family travel actually happens. The road runs from Maenam in the west to Choeng Mon at the northeast tip — fifteen minutes end-to-end with the ocean on your left, coconut groves and resort gates on your right.

What makes the coast cohere is the water. The bays face north, sheltered by the mainland and a scattering of small islands offshore, so they are the calmest swimming on the island year-round. Even in shoulder months when Chaweng turns choppy, you can usually still get in here. The trade-off: sand is more golden than powder-white, and a few stretches turn rocky at low tide.

The coast splits into four characters. Maenam is the budget-friendly fishing-village end — small resorts, local restaurants, fewer farangs. Bophut is the social hub, with the Friday-night walking street and restaurants in restored Chinese shophouses. Plai Laem is the design-led headland — Six Senses territory, secluded coves, no village. Choeng Mon sits at the airport-side tip — pool villas, the calmest bay of all, sandbar walks at low tide.

Most first-time Samui families end up somewhere on this coast. It's the closest thing to a safe choice — calm water, walkable evening options, no monsoon worry until late October.
