You arrive by ferry and the cliffs rise sheer from the Aegean, striated red and black and white, the villages clinging to the rim like snowdrifts. This is the caldera, the remains of a volcanic eruption that reshaped the island 3,600 years ago. It's the view that launched a thousand postcards.

Santorini offers a distilled version of the Greek Islands experience: whitewashed houses, blue-domed churches, black sand beaches, sunsets that turn the Aegean to fire. But the volume is turned up to eleven. The crowds are intense, especially in Oia at sunset. The prices are higher than elsewhere in the Cyclades. The pressure to photograph everything is relentless.

But the island is bigger than the view. Rent a car and explore the interior: the vineyards, the traditional villages, the archaeological site of Akrotiri (the "Minoan Pompeii"). Hike from Fira to Imerovigli along the caldera path — the views are just as good, the crowds thinner.

Shoulder season (May-June, September-October) is essential. August is a scrum. Stay in Imerovigli or Firostefani for a quieter experience. Pair with Naxos or Paros for a dose of "real" Greek island life.
