why seattle

summers are drier than the reputation. pike place before 9am.

The air in Seattle smells of three things: salt water from the Puget Sound, damp pine from the forests that surround it, and roasting coffee. It's a city built between two mountain ranges and a whole lot of water, and you feel that geography everywhere you go — the glimpse of a snow-capped peak between skyscrapers, the sound of a ferry horn cutting through the morning fog.

This is the city of Amazon and Microsoft, and the tech money is visible in the gleaming new towers. But the old Seattle is still there. Pike Place Market is genuinely worth it, but go early, before 9 am, when it's still a working market and not a tourist attraction. Watch the fish fly, then get a piroshky from the stand next door and eat it overlooking the water.

The trade-off for all that green is, yes, the rain. For nine months of the year, it's a city of Gore-Tex and excellent bookstores. But from July to September, it's arguably the most beautiful city in America.

Don't try to see it all from one base. Stay in one neighbourhood — Ballard for breweries and Nordic history, Capitol Hill for nightlife, Fremont for its eccentric vibe — and explore it deeply. The downtown core is for work; the neighbourhoods are for living.
