The limestone paving stones of Diocletian's Palace are so worn by seventeen centuries of footsteps they gleam like marble under the streetlights. This isn't a museum you pay to enter; it's a city grid where people hang their laundry from windows set in Roman walls and cafes spill out into ancient courtyards.

You'll spend your time getting deliberately lost in the labyrinthine alleys, emerging onto the Peristyle square to the sound of a cappella singers, their voices echoing off the stone. The Riva, a wide seaside promenade, is a modern contrast — a river of people, gelato, and sunglasses. It's alive and loud, smelling of salt and sunscreen.

The trade-off for this living history is the crowd. In July and August, especially when a cruise ship is in port, the narrow passages can feel like a human traffic jam. The city beaches are functional, but not the main event. Think of Split as the perfect, energetic base camp.

See the palace, walk the Riva, climb Marjan Hill for the postcard view. Then, book a ferry. Split is a fantastic introduction to the Dalmatian coast, but its greatest trick is being a beautiful, functional doorway to the islands. Pair with Hvar or Vis.
