why tel aviv

the bubble. bauhaus blocks and the thwack of matkot paddles.

The sound you'll remember is the thwack-thwack of matkot, the wooden paddles hitting a rubber ball on the beach, a rhythm that never seems to stop. That's Tel Aviv in a nutshell: a city of perpetual motion, wedged between the cool, white curves of Bauhaus buildings and the warm, salty Mediterranean.

People call it 'the bubble,' a determinedly secular, liberal island that feels a world away from the history-heavy weight of Jerusalem, just an hour down the road. This is where modern Israel comes to exhale. The city's spine is its beachfront promenade, but its heart is in neighbourhoods like the cobbled lanes of Neve Tzedek or the gritty, art-splashed walls of Florentin.

The food scene is world-class, moving far beyond falafel into fiercely creative, vegetable-forward cooking. The air is thick with humidity and the smell of the sea, cut with the scent of za'atar from a market stall. It's not a city for quiet contemplation. It's loud, unapologetically fast, and expensive. For ancient history, you go to Jaffa, the ancient port city that Tel Aviv has gracefully swallowed whole.

Come between April and June, when the weather is perfect. The best way to see it is by electric scooter, zipping down Rothschild Boulevard to the Carmel Market. Just be prepared for the prices to match the energy level: high.
