Zurich isn't a city that shouts. It doesn't have the aggressive charm of Rome or the chaotic energy of Bangkok. It's a city of quiet pleasures: the sound of church bells echoing across the Limmat, the crunch of a Läckerli biscuit, the cool breeze off the lake on a summer evening.

The old town (Altstadt) is worth a wander, with its cobbled streets and medieval houses. The Bahnhofstrasse is where you go if you like designer shopping and don't mind paying for it. But the real Zurich is in the neighbourhoods: Niederdorf for nightlife, Kreis 4 and 5 for art galleries and independent shops.

Don't skip the lake. Rent a paddleboat, take a ferry to Rapperswil, or just sit by the shore and watch the swans. The water is so clean you can drink it — which pretty much sums up the city.

It's expensive, no question. But you can save money by eating at local restaurants and taking advantage of the city's free activities. Consider it an investment in a place that actually delivers on its promises. Pair with a few days in the mountains for contrast.
