Both sit on the quiet, embassy side of Orchard, minutes apart. The real question: should the hotel be part of the holiday, or just the room you come back to?
the short answer
- Near-neighbours in the same luxury band, so location and cost won't decide this for you.
- What decides it is what your children do between outings.
- With kids under ten, book the Shangri-La: its lifeguarded water park and indoor kids' club are the real thing, confirmed by parents in reviews every year since 2021.
- Book the St. Regis when the kids are older, the plan is to be out all day, and a freshly rebuilt room matters more than what's downstairs.
- Neither sits at an MRT door, so plan on taxis either way.

shangri-la, if…
- Your kids are under ten and judge every hotel by its pool
- You want at least one full day where nobody leaves the property
- Afternoon naps split the family, and the grounds keep the awake half busy
- A castle- or safari-themed suite would be the story they retell at school
- You'd rather do laundry mid-trip than overpack — the family pantry runs all night
the st. regis, if…
- Your kids are past the ball-pit years and sightsee all day with you
- Worn edges in a room bother you more than missing kids' facilities
- Your family eats vegetarian and wants reliable options within walking distance
- You want the same trip to feel like a couples' hotel after bedtime
- A morning at the Botanic Gardens beats a morning on a water slide
before you book – fyi!
The labels mislead in both directions. Parents assume the St. Regis, being the more formal brand, won't really welcome children; reviewers instead describe games and caps at check-in, kid-sized bathrobes, and a butler building a tepee in the room. And they assume the Shangri-La, being “the family one,” runs itself. It doesn't: the kids' club charges by the hour, the water park shuts at the first rumble of thunder, and the standard family room physically can't take a third bed.
The difference is hardware, not warmth. One hotel was built for children; the other is simply kind to them. Put any special request, from a cot to a child's diet, in writing before you land — both have dropped verbal ones.
